2015 Swim Season is Almost Here!
This year the Great Falls Rapids youth swim team will be competing in Division 9 in the NVSL which should make this a very fun and competitive season.
We are very excited to announce that Nick Mason will be our new Head Coach this season, with another William & Mary swimmer Jessica Russell as Assistant Coach. Coach Nick is a recent W&M graduate, who has coached swimming for over ten years. Email Coach Nick
A Volunteer Point system has been put in place this year for Rapids parents. Depending on the age of your swimmer, a moderate level of volunteerism is required this year at our NVSL swim team meets and social events. If your schedule won't permit your personal involvement, you can designate another adult family member to fill the jobs, or contact a volunteer coordinator for more options.
Registration is now open! Register below for Swim, Dive or Swim & Dive teams. Click the link(s) below to sign-up your athlete(s) for our 2015 NVSL Swim & Dive programs!
2015 NVSL Swim Meet Schedule
In addition to these "A" meets held on Saturday mornings, we also have "B" meets, aka Developmental Meets, every Monday evening from June 22 - July 20, alternating between Home and Away meets. Please clear your calendar, and plan to attend both A & B meets from late June to late July - our team needs your swimmers, and we (other parents) need your help!
This 14 page guide for new swim parents decribes the NVSL, our A Meets & B Meets, all the strokes & events, and what a DQ is and how they work for each stroke and lots more. It's written for new parents, but has good info for returning parents or swimmers who want to understand more about how our youth swim team works.
NVSL pools and NVSL teams are held to high standards as swimming teams for kids, and you will find it hard to find better summer swim teams than the Northern Virginia Swim League. NVSL swim meets run like clockwork, with the dedicated help from parent volunteers - it will seem chaotic at first, but you'll be amazed at the organization of the NVSL operation!
Northern Virginia Swimming League
Visit the NVSL site for current rankings and other great info!
The NVSL, or Northern Virginia Swim League, was founded in 1956 and is the largest and oldest competitive swim league in the United States. Over 17,000 swimmers, from 102 northern Virginia summer swim teams, and nearly 50 NVSL dive teams. There are 17 divisions of 6 teams each in the NVSL, competing for 7 weeks during each summer.
NVSL youth swim teams have produced at least 7 Olympic swimmers. The first was Melissa Belote, a three time gold medalist at the 1972 Olympics at the age of 15. Great Falls Swim Team has our own US Olympic Swimmer in Kate Zeigler, who swam for the Great Falls Rapids kids swim team, setting many still unbroken NVSL records.
Great Falls Swim & Tennis Club is proud of our long standing association with the NVSL and for being the only NVSL pool in Great Falls. Our kids swim team is one of the most spirited and fun teams in the NVSL, and in terms of local swim teams has to be one of the best NVSL pools in the entire league.
To find other fine NVSL pools, use the Google locater Map to see all NVSL pools on a map, and get directions to the pool.
